No Regrets!

I’ve been thinking a lot about regret lately.

We often spend sleepless nights over “if only’s,” only to forget that our every current moment is in fact an “if only.” We look back and wished that we had “zigged” instead of “zagged,” but we forget that an alternate universe version of ourselves may indeed be pining away in longing over what we in fact now are experiencing.

And besides, when you live long enough to be granted one or two of your “if only’s”, you very often realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side, and there are hidden trade-offs to every choice or bargain.

I’m sure there’s something very witty and urbane here to be said about some analogy to Schrödinger’s cat and quantum thingummies and non-directional causality, but the point is that life becomes far less stressful and far more enjoyable when we let go of “what if’s” and “maybe’s” and simply learn to live in and be grateful for our present moment.

We can always to use the lessons of the past to design a better Now, but should never allow them to drive us into depression and morbidity. The ride of life goes so damn quickly already, and if we spend the whole thing looking backward, we’ll miss the view. And that would be a damned shame.

No regrets! Face forward, eyes wide open, and “full speed ahead! Damn the torpedoes!”
